Fantasy In Death is the next installment in J.D. Robb‘s futuristic series about Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Roarke. This time around, Eve has to solve a locked room mystery when a gaming expert dies in the middle of a game, in a locked holo-room.

Once again, J.D. Robb/Nora Roberts has delivered an excellent, fast-paced story. I found it particularly fun since I love video games, and thought it all played out in an interesting way. Plus there was some really nice Eve/Roarke interactions that deepen their relationship, whch was great. While the mysteries in this series are consistently strong, I keep coming back to this series because I’m so in love with Eve and Roarke. Their relationship is constantly maturing and changing. I especially liked that it was Roarke who was more off-balance in this book, with Eve acting as the rock, since it’s usually the other way around. Can’t wait for the next one.

By my count, Fantasy In Death is the 32nd book in the series, not counting any of the short stories or Remember When since Eve and Roarke only get half a book. Colour me confused, since J.D. Robb‘s website says that this is the 30th book in the series.

Kindred in Death (In Death #29) by J.D. Robb

Released: November 9, 2009
Format: Hardcover
Pages: 374
Publisher: Putnam Books
ISBN-13: 978-0-399-15595-6

It’s kind of hard to believe that this series is already at 30 books, especially since it was only started in 1996. J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) is a writing machine!

In Kindred In Death, Eve Dallas has another murder on her hands, this time the teenage daughter of an NYPSD captain, brutalized and killed in her own bedroom. The regular team – Peabody, McNab, Feeney, Baxter and Trueheart – goes about building their case while Louise and Charles’ wedding looms in the near future. Once again, Robb’s created a solid mystery with lots of twists and turns. You can really feel the case taking shape over the course of the novel, and the strength and depth of Eve and Roarke’s relationship.

I don’t actually have too much to say about this book. I basically devoured it, as I do with all of Robb/Roberts’ work, and it was great. I really don’t understand how she can write so much and have it always be enjoyable but I guess some people just have a gift, and the discipline to use it.
