Angels’ Pawn (Guild Hunters novella) by Nalini Singh

Released: early 2009
Format: e-book
Publisher: Berkeley

Angels’ Pawn is the first story released in the Guild Hunters world but it’s labeled a “companion novella to Angels’ Blood” on the title page, so I guess that’s the best way to describe it.

Angels’ Pawn is about Ashwini, one of Elena’s Guild Hunter friends, and her relationship with a vampire named Janvier. It’s an adversarial relationship, since Ashwini’s had to chase Janvier through the bayou a bunch of times, but there’s also a lot of flirtation. In this novella, she asks for his help in dealing with a problem, when she’s hired by an angel to find a missing vampire, so there’s some action, some flirtation and some insight into the mythology of this world.

It was fun to read this novella because it gives you more information about characters who pop up as secondary in the two novels. I never used to care for short stories and novellas but, when they’re written as well as this, they can be very satisfying despite their shorter length. Nalini Singh has promised to revisit these characters later and I hope she does it soon because they were a lot of fun.

P.S. No pic this week since there’s no picture in the e-book.
