Dying Bites is the debut novel of DD Barant, a Canadian author. It’s all about an FBI profiler named Jace Valchek, who’s transported to an alternate dimension where humans account for less than 1% of the world’s population. The rest of the population is comprised of vampires, werewolves and golems. This world has government structure similar to ours; Jace has been transported to this new dimension by the NSA to investigate a serial killer.
I really liked this story. The concept is neat and Jace’s newness to the world is a great way for the author to introduce the differences without having large chunks of exposition. And it helps the reader identify with Jace since it’s all new to us too. Jace is a great protagonist and is surrounded by some interesting characters, although I’m not a huge fan of a couple of the supporting characters. My favourite is probably Charlie, although the bad guy is also pretty interesting.
The next book in this series is due out in March and I can’t wait!
